Spiritual Ballers is a basketball inspired clothing brand located in Severna Park, MD that was created in 2021 by the owner Jake Koverman. Spiritual Ballers is a faith-based athleisure brand operating on the pillars of faith, dedication, and trust. Basketball and faith have been in his blood since birth with his dad being a former athlete and his mother keeping Jake and his sister involved in church.

 

With a strong belief in Christ and a sharp skill for basketball, the combination has given Jake the inspiration to make his dreams become a reality even through trials and injuries.

Jake grew up playing plenty of AAU basketball and he loved being in the gym since he was 5 years old. He knew that learning everything about the game would help him to be successful. Playing for various teams all the way up until High School really helped Jake to experience the game on different levels while continuing to play AAU in the offseason to stay in shape.

Jake’s mother being a strong believer has given Jake a

solid-spiritual foundation from which to build his life upon. A foundation built on the same pillars that inspired the brand and the solid rock of Jesus Christ in which we can be prepared to weather the storms of life and sports as they arise. Jake tore his ACL, MCL and both meniscus tendons in his right knee in just the beginning months of his junior season of High School. One month later Jake’s mom was diagnosed with CNS Lymphoma of the brain, and it would take many surgeries and treatment to fix.

For months Jake was worried about his injury being career-ending and even more about his mom’s situation. With an abundance of prayer and strong faith in Christ, Jake was able to devote more time into his rehabilitation and trust the process while leaving it in the Lord’s hands. His faith paid off, Jake received a full-ride Division I scholarship to High Point University in North Carolina and his mom is disease free. That experience and test of Jake’s faith would lead to the birth of the idea to the Spiritual Ballers brand.

Since then, Jake has battled Covid-19, experienced lifestyle changes, a torn lateral meniscus, missed games, physical therapy, and his most recent injury a torn ligament on the top of his foot. This injury has required Jake to get another surgery and to test his faith, dedication, and trust once again. Jake is currently healing and anxious to begin rehabilitation while once again leaning on his faith and trust in Christ to help him through.

Learning from the Christian foundation that his mother laid out before him, and the love for the game of basketball that was instilled from his father, it gives Jake inspiration daily to spread his love for Jesus Christ and basketball through his brand.
